You the business owner may have said to yourself one of the following:

"I can motivate people." Is this statement really true? The reality is normally very different because unless a person can motivate themselves it is unrealistic to waste energy trying to do if for them. Would it be better for you, the business owner to look at how you can support your employees in identifying what motivates them?

"Money is a great motivator." This may hold true for a short time; but, once a person attains a certain level of income, then will money no longer be an issue? Ask yourself the questions, "What tools have I in place in my organization to get beyond that understanding? How do I identify what really motives people and what really empowers my employees?"

"I know what motivates me, so I know what motivates my employees." Do you really believe this? The simple fact is that people are motivated by different things. For example, it could be to have more free time or to achieve peer recognition. Everyone is not motivated by the same things. The question you should ask yourself is, "What tools do I have at my disposal to understand my own motivation and the motives of my employees?"

The following are some key pointers in understanding motivation:

Motivation starts with you! Understanding your own motivation is key to you helping your employees to do like wise. In the words of William Shakespeare "Know thy self."

Company goals should be aligned with the goals of the employees? You as the owner can be fired by goals you have for the company, your employees has also to be equally fired up. Establishing goals that are SMARTER which are: specific, measurable, acceptable, realistic, timely, extending of capabilities, and rewarding to those involved ensures that his takes place.

To support the motivation of an employee you have to understand what motivates each of them. Listen to what they have to say and watching what they do will give you a detailed insight into their motivations.

Have systems that support employee motivation. If there are clear guidelines as to employee performance, company policies and compensation then they are no reasons why misunderstandings should occur. Employees will have certainty in the system and be treated equitably.
